ION®/CME Digital Drive

Programmable Digital Motion Drive for Step, DC Brush, and Brushless DC Motor Control

A programmable version of the standard ION model, the ION/CME facilitates the capability for designers to download and run motion programs directly on the ION drive itself. This feature off-loads the host, enables standalone operation and increases the flexibility to distribute motion programs throughout the machine. Programs can now be downloaded to the ION/CME drive over UDP and TCP Ethernet protocols, in addition to serial and CANbus communications options.

Features:

  • DC brush, BLDC & step motor versions
  • Ethernet, CANbus or serial communications
  • S-curve, trapezoidal, velocity contouring, electronic gearing profiles
  • Pulse & direction input
  • Position and current loops
  • Field Oriented Control (FOC)
  • Sinusoidal commutation
  • Advanced PID filter with velocity and acceleration feedforward
  • Programmable acceleration and deceleration
  • Stall detection & auto current reduction
  • Auxiliary encoder input supports gearing & dual loop applications
  • Up to 9.8 A continuous, up to 21 A peak current
  • 40 kHz PWM frequency
  • 102 µsec servo loop rate
  • Up to 8 general purpose user inputs and 6 general purpose outputs
  • +/- 10V high resolution 16-bit ADC input
  • Programmable dual biquad filters
  • Execution of C-Motion code at up to 96 MIPS
  • 256 KB of programmable user code space
  • C-Motion Engine & Pro-Motion development tools

With the ION/CME, designers need not depend upon a dedicated host PC or host controller. By allowing embedded storage and execution of motion control code, designers may increase response times and efficiencies of their designs.

C-Motion® Engine

The embedded code execution capability is made possible by the addition of a dedicated module on the ION called the C-Motion® Engine (CME). Program development is simplified using PMD's C-Motion development environment, which includes an extensive library of motion control code, with many complete examples available to customize and build upon. C-Motion enables machine designers to quickly program motion for demanding applications using standard C/C++ programming.

Powerful

IONs provide very high power density in a rugged, flexible form factor. They perform profile generation, servo compensation, stall detection, field oriented control, digital torque control and many other motion control functions. Additional features include Ethernet, CAN bus or serial communications and extensive general purpose digital and analog I/Os.

Easy To Use

Working with the ION Digital Drive, PMD’s powerful Pro-Motion® GUI makes it easy to graph and analyze axis performance, while C-Motion® and VB-Motion® allow users to develop their own applications using C/C++ or Visual BASIC.

Built on the Magellan® Motion Processor

ION ’s Magellan® Motion Processor provides a powerful instruction set to control the motion application, monitor performance and synchronize overall drive behavior. User selectable profiling modes include S-curve, trapezoidal, velocity contouring and electronic gearing. Servo loop compensation utilizes PID control, velocity and acceleration feedforward, and dual bi-quad filters. Additional features include limit switches, breakpoints, secondary encoder input for master-slave and electronic gearing applications.
